Hi, It’s me. I’m the Black woman.
Listen, we are not a monolith.
But if you’re curious about how this particular Black woman plans to participate in the Economic Blackout, redirect my resources and make conscious consumption part of my life, then let’s talk about it.
Am I shopping today?
No. I don’t have any money lol. However if I did , I’d only shop at local businesses and pay with cash to avoid making them use their payment processing servers.
How do I redirect my resources?
I start with one item at a time. So far I’ve switched out my paper products, detergent, soap, tea, and body butter with Black owned brands.
How do make an effort to be a conscious consumer?
Before I head to a major outlet, I check in: can I buy this from a Black owned business? Is there a local business that carries it? Do I genuinely need it right now? And lawd yes, it takes effort and time but it’s worth it.
For the past two years I’ve curated Black Business Guides to make it easier for people to find Black owned brands and regularly shop with them. They need our consistent support - not just surge support during Black History month or Juneteenth.
In solidarity with the Economic Blackout today, I’m offering a “Swap It Like It’s Hot” Guide!
Send me 10 products you want to swap out (aka not buy on Amazon) and I’ll curate a 1 sheet with 50 Black owned alternatives.
Price: $100
In the spirit of full transparency, this is (low-key) a rent party.
This expensive Atlanta rent is due and in spite of the countless hours of work I’ve put in this month, it hasn’t been enough. It never is. In other words, I ain’t got it.
Please be clear, that’s not why I do this work. I’m serious about amplifying Black owned businesses AND sustaining my own life.
No, but for real - poverty is about to be a distant memory ‘cause this sucks.
I’m claiming it for 2025!
Lemme stay focused, back to the guides…
