The last movie I cried at was The Woman King.
The theater was nearly empty. However, there was a man and his adult daughter a few rows ahead. When the house lights came up, I cradled my head and openly wept. I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder, it was the father. “ It’s ok, sister. I know. It’s ok” he said.
The cruelty.
Our magnificence in spite of it.
Another reminder of how deeply violated we’ve been and continue to be.
He opened his arms and I crumpled into them. His daughter put her hands on my back and started to breathe with me until I was calm. Then we shared a hug as if we were cousins and parted ways - no words needed.
I love us.
I recently saw Sinners. Again, I wept.
