I shared this note about Community Care on LinkedIn earlier. However, thanks to the algorithms of oppression, my posts barely have any reach lately so here we are.
As for collective community care: it works.
A few days before the 1st of the month, I needed $2,000 in 2 days to cover expenses or I was about to be late on rent, have my car repossessed and lose my car insurance.
My account was in the negative.
The world is on fire, I had been incredibly sick and it was barely on my radar. In terms of chronic worry from financial stress, I was at capacity.
It’ll work out. Or, it won’t.
Who cares at this point.
And then, a decent Substack payment hit. ($7/ subscriber)
After that, a sizable “Buy Me a Coffee” payout posted. ($5 / per cuppa)
Over the next couple of days, generous contributions of Community Care were sent to my payment links. ($4 - $100)
Before I knew it, I had what I needed.
I’m serious when I say every amount makes a difference.
The person that sent $4
The subscriber that upgraded from free to paid
The supporter that sent 1 cup of coffee
Each one had a major impact on my life.
That’s why when a person sends a message saying “I wish it was more” I quickly stop them and say, no babe.
I want them to understand that by contributing, they did more than most regardless of the amount. I want them to understand that their collective effort makes an invaluable difference.
My point is, if you see a Palestinian GoFundMe, a community mutual aid ask, or a student bail fund and you can only send $5, send it.
It helps more than you know.
If you don’t have it to spare, trust - I understand. Please make your own need known. It’s alright. The shame of asking for support is not ours to carry. Our society and their purposely oppressive systems should be ashamed.
To the generously resourced people, I have other ideas for you later…
And yes, yes I do have a file where I save every kind note sent my way because I love them that damn much. I read them for encouragement on the hard days. (They’re read often.)
As for me, the places you can support my own wellness and work are in the comments of the LinkedIn post. This includes a campaign I recently started to help me relocate to Mexico because this? This ain’t it.
Ask for help if you need it.
Help others if you can.
We aren’t meant to do life alone.
